Growing, Protecting, and Celebrating Maine’s Family-Owned Businesses

Presented by Catherine Wygant Fossett, Executive Director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business and Jennifer Nemi, Business Development Manager of Franklin Printing

Founded in 1994, the Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB) is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting, strengthening and empowering family-owned businesses throughout Maine.  We strive to be a comprehensive resource for family business owners, executives, and employees. With the support and input of our members, associate partners, and sponsors, we continue to grow and welcome new participants who are availing themselves of our over 40 programs, educational opportunities, and events—more than 1,000 people in the past year alone!

We define a family business wherein one owner either shares ownership or works in the business with at least one other family member (contemporaneously or over time) and has a commitment to the continuation of the enterprise.  With the often quoted statics of 30 / 13 /  3 percent chance that a business will be passed down to the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation, we know we have our work cut out for us and we’re ready!

Catherine Wygant Fossett joined the IFOB in 2014 as its executive director.  Prior to joining, she was the executive director of the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce where she oversaw the 50th Anniversary of Windjammer Days, developed the Claw Down Lobster Bite Competition, and annually produced the region’s definitive travel guide.  She is a graduate of the Maine Association of Nonprofits’ Executive Leadership Institute.

A graduate of Bates College, she has served on dozens of boards including the Advertising Club of Maine, the World Affairs Council of Maine, MidCoast Chamber Council, Mobilize MidCoast Maine Leadership Committee, Maine Sports Commission, and Rotary.  She currently serves on the board of the Amputee Association of Maine, the committee for Boothbay Treasures #Giving Tuesday, the Advisory Board for the MWM Maine Women Magazine, and the Boothbay Sea and Science Center Advisory Board.  She lives with her husband in Boothbay, and is an avid boater and outdoor enthusiast with a love of great food and local crafts.

Jennifer Nemi is a member of the third generation of a family-owned printing business, Franklin Printing in Farmington, Maine.  Her grandfather Joseph Nemi started the company in the late 1960’s by purchasing the Livermore Falls Advertiser and Franklin Journal.  In the late 70’s, early 80’s Joe’s two sons came on board, Greg and Dick. The business expanded throughout the 70’s and 80’s by continually increasing its commercial printing sales. In 1986, at the urging requests of his sons, Joe decided to sell the newspaper business and focus solely on commercial printing. Over the years Franklin Printing has continued to grow and reinvest its profits into the most advanced equipment in technology. In 2008 it moved into the digital printing business adding another market segment to the mix. Today their services range from offset printing to wide format.

Prior to joining the family business, Jennifer attended Endicott College and graduated with a BS in Marketing.  After college she stayed in Massachusetts and worked in the marketing/business development field for a large commercial contractor.  After tiring of the city life she relocated to Vermont and continued in the same field of construction, doing marketing and business development as well.  While in Vermont she ran 2 half marathons and completed the Chicago Marathon.  With a strong urge to get back closer to family and the ocean, Jennifer and her boyfriend moved to Maine in the spring of 2015.

In the fall of 2015 she transitioned into her role as Business Development Manager for Franklin Printing.  She works out of her home office in Portland which is a nice central location to customers.  She’s a member of the Next Generation Peer Advisory group and Membership committee at the IFOB and belongs to the Falmouth Connects networking group in Falmouth.  In her free time you can catch her skiing at Sugarloaf in the winter and boating or spending time on the beach in the summer.  She’s also competing in her first triathlon this July.
